RENT/BUY A HOUSE

Barcelona is a city full of nuances. Each neighborhood has its own personality, pace and lifestyle. Choosing where to live will depend on your priorities: proximity to work, access to international schools, more family or urban environment, or even architectural preferences.

Born in Barcelona and as a relocation expert in my city, I can guide you through what each area has to offer and help you identify the neighborhood that best fits your lifestyle.

Eixample

Elegant, central and perfectly connected

Undoubtedly the most desired area of the city, because of the grid layout of its streets, the best connected to visit on foot or by public transport most emblematic places.

Modernist buildings, two steps from the city center in Plaza Catalunya, where the Ramblas begin, and with the streets Paseo de Gracia and Rambla de Catalunya luxurious and pleasant to walk.

The lower floors are usually dark. You can find floors of 50 to 300 square meters with patience. You will find all kinds of shops and restaurants, no need to move.

The Left of Eixample is the favorite area of the LGBTQ+ community, with establishments, shops, restaurants and bars dedicated to this collective. But it is a part of the city where you can live and walk in peace, without having to belong to this community.

Old town: Gótico & Born

🎨 Lively history, culture and bohemian charm

From Plaza Cataluña towards the port you will find the oldest part of the city. The streets are almost all narrow, with low and rather old buildings. Recently many of them have been reformed, and you can find jewels to live on, but they are very sought after.

It is a more bohemian part of the city. There are beautiful places to live like Plaza Real, near the Church of Santa Maria del Mar and El Born, the Mercat de Santa Caterina, but it is very difficult to find housing in these places, both for purchase and rent.

And in other adjacent streets the atmosphere is not so cozy, although if you are looking for a place with mixed races, this is the place.

It is the area with the greatest offer of theaters, live music, etc.

For young people, bohemian and/or creative.

Upper Diagonal & Sant Gervasi

🏡The favorite area of families and expats

It is the area where we can find apartments with a certain category, also some more modest, with a good quality of construction more recent.

It is a neighborhood that still maintains good communications with the center and also has good proximity to country or foreign private schools, recommended for foreigners.

They also have a very good offer of shops of all kinds, as well as good restaurants.

Without being the most exclusive area, it is perhaps the best to live in. And the best connected to be close to schools.

For middle-aged people and families looking for stability and quality of life.

Pedralbes & Sarrià

💎 Exclusivity, privacy and residential life

One of the most exclusive areas of the city, where you can find beautiful high-level homes, where you live much less stressed by noise and people on the street.

It is the area closest to private schools. Sarrià also has its old town that retains the flavor of the summer village that had been, with narrow streets with houses in colonial style, elegant, beautiful, with gardens.

Perhaps about retail commerces it is a little bit short and on certain occasions it will be necessary to travel to buy according to what. Many restaurants and very varied and quality.

All of Barcelona is well connected between its neighborhoods, but in these two you have to have more patience to get to the center, because there are fewer options or less schedules.

For older people, managers and families.

Sants, Les Corts

🚆 Connectivity and local life

Two neighborhoods of middle-class people, in line with life in Barcelona in general.

People of all ages. Mix of old and modern buildings, good communications and a multitude of shops of all kinds.

The area of Sants Station and Plaza España with close proximity to the train and the airport for any travel.

For people who value comfort and mobility.

Gràcia

🌿 Bohemian, creative and full of life

It had been an ancient town, which at the end of the 19th century was annexed to Barcelona. Its streets and buildings maintain that old order, all without high-level housing, more prepared for people of normal or medium level, and especially if you like the associative activities of all kinds that you can find, as well as a very authentic neighborhood life, with a lot of popular participation, as in the Fiestas de Gracia de Agosto.

Absolutely full of shops, restaurants, terraces, etc. They are the most combative collective of the city against tourists, expats, etc.

It is the neighborhood for young and middle-aged bohemians par excellence.

Poble Nou, 22@

🌊 Modernity by the sea

It was an industrial and working people’s area, but from the 1992 Olympic Games it became a zone of exclusive dwellings, very close to the sea and sometimes overlooking the sea, where many technological nomads, expats, and international companies settled.

Good standard of living, with more restaurants dedicated to these groups of foreigners, with many brunch, and prices that double or triple those of the shops in the rest of the city.

Little offer of services and shops of any kind. Quite lonely streets.

For middle-aged and lonely people.

Other districts

🌊 Other options also valid

Maybe they are not the most beautiful, nor the best communicated, nor those that have better environment to live, but Barcelona is a basically quiet city, in which you can live anywhere with minimum measures of security and prevention.

So if you have a job or activity in one of these neighborhoods, it’s also not a big deal to live in them, and we can find apartments in good conditions or in interesting streets.

Surroundings

🌲 More space, tranquility and fresh air

There are certain villages near Barcelona recommended to live, with residential areas of good or high level and with their own distinctive characteristics.

All them have public transport to Barcelona, although with a longer transfer time and fewer time options, so they are not recommended if you do not have own private transport, or some laxity in the schedules, both to go to work, to the school/university, in order to make the usual purchases. All these localities have some international private schools nearby.

Sant Just Desvern & Esplugues de Llobregat, attached to the northern area of Barcelona, with quiet streets, individual houses with garden, wooded areas, a haven of peace.

Sant Cugat del Vallès, behind the mountain of Tibidabo, with high quality residential areas and a center full of shops and lots of life. With schools and university nearby.

Castelldefels, right next to the beach for those who want to enjoy walks by the sea. Area with few shops and many restaurants. Quiet life.

👉 Choosing the ideal place to live is key for a comfortable and satisfying adaptation.
